Why do managers need strategic perspective?

"Strategic management is the responsibility of all managers, and what is more, a responsibility that is becoming more and more important. It is not sufficient for a manager to think of management in some operational or functional context, simply to know his piece of the jigsaw well and trust that others know theirs equally as well. The very least that a manager requires is to understand how his bit of the jigsaw fits into the rest in the context of the strategic problems and direction of the organisation. If he does not, then the effectiveness of strategic management, and particularly the implementation of strategy, can be severely impaired."

The most common training courses that we run are variations on:

  • Business planning - providing managers with guidance in the process of business planning and the structure of a business plan. The precise content is tailored to the specific requirements of your organisation; thus we may delve deeper into market segmentation or spend time developing spreadsheet models. Whatever the "customisation" there are common principles in all our courses:
  • customer-focus
  • measuring and managing performance drivers
  • the importance of intangibles
  • integrating finance and marketing
  • how to transform plans into actions
  • Strategy - all managers need strategic perspective and our programmes are able to cater for managers from all levels within the organisation. We incorporate the work of the leading strategic gurus - Porter, Prahalad, Hamel, Mintzberg, Ohmae etc - plus some penetrating analysis from some less well-known thinkers. We do so not as some esoteric academic exercise but always with the question in mind: "How can this help me to achieve sustainable competitive advantage?" Our approach is to drill down to those factors that will make a real difference, such as:
  • segmentation
  • differentiation
  • key performance drivers
  • value management principles
