Strategy

Consultancy / Implementation

"The strategy map describes the process for transforming intangible assets into tangible customer and financial outcomes. It provides executives with a framework for describing and managing strategy."

Kaplan & Norton

"Managers with a committing style engage people in a journey. They lead in such a way that everyone on the journey helps shape its course … strategies only take on value as committed people infuse them with energy."

Henry Mintzberg

"A leader also has to make sure that everyone understands the strategy. Strategy used to be thought of as some mystical vision that only people at the top understood. But that violated the most fundamental purpose of a strategy, which is to inform each of the many thousands of things that get done in an organisation every day,  and to make sure that those things are all aligned in the same basic direction."

Michael Porter

Implementation

Hard Management can help to turn strategies and business plans into actions through:

  • Involvement - the involvement in the planning process of the people who will implement the plans is critical. Involving staff can reveal valuable information that could impact on the plans. Just as importantly it establishes a foundation for communication and the introduction of change.
  • Strategy Maps - over the last ten years, a substantial proportion of large corporations have embraced the work of Kaplan & Norton relating to Balanced Scorecard / Strategy Maps. A strategy map is a method of describing a strategy - often on a single piece of A4. It is simple and direct. The Balanced Scorecard is so-called because it seeks to redress the over-reliance on purely financial measures and objectives. Instead the scorecard focuses on the drivers of performance rather than the financial outcomes; it addresses the causes rather than the symptoms. Balanced Scorecards can be cascaded down to every individual within the organisation, making "strategy everyone's everyday job".

  • Articulating the vision - strategy maps can help in articulating the vision of the organisation. They are not enough on their own though. They must be given life.
